Vice President of Engineering

Job description

Major League Hacking (MLH) is looking for someone to join our growing family and (currently virtual) New York City office as our Vice President of Engineering.

As our VP of Engineering you’ll be responsible for building out a team of developers who will create and maintain engineering products that help aspiring software engineers level up and launch their careers. The software that you and your team write will power the largest community of early career developers in the world and help redefine the future of work & technical education.

This is a key leadership role in a rapidly growing startup reporting directly to the CEO.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Write Code (at first). This isn’t a job where you’ll only be directing people and planning sprints. As a small company with an even smaller planned engineering team, you will be responsible for pushing code. As the team grows, you’ll need to do less of this over time.
  • Hire & Manage a Team. We’ll look to you to help us hire a team of engineers and then manage them, conducting 1:1s and ensuring the team is successful.
  • Engineering Management. You’ll plan sprints, conduct retros, and do code reviews all in service of supporting and creating products for MLH.

What success looks like

Within your first year, we’ll expect you to have hired a small team of developers and worked with them to create a successful and efficient engineering team. You’ll have added key features to our existing products driven by the needs of our team and feedback from our users.

Requirements

  • Previous experience leading engineering teams, especially remote teams.
  • Experience in Ruby and Javascript, we’re a Rails & React/Next.js shop
  • Strong experience in TDD and modern development practices
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Impeccable organizational and project management skills
  • An interest in reimagining the future of education and work
